 AHS School Profile 2009-10

Mission Statement

Our mission is to create an engaging teaching-learning environment that values student individuality and encourages students to:

  • recognize and achieve their full potential,
  • collaborate in the learning process,
  • become lifelong learners, and
  • actively participate in their local and global societies..

Community

The Littleton Public Schools serve the cities of Centennial, Littleton, and adjacent unincorporated areas. Littleton and Centennial are suburbs south of Denver with many business and professional residents. The student population is approximately 15,000. There are thirteen elementary schools, four middle schools, two charter schools, three high schools and one alternative high school.

Arapahoe High School

A comprehensive college preparatory four-year high school with a national reputation as "excellent", opened in 1964.

Variable Scheduling

The Variable is an adaptation of college semester scheduling. Many classes meet fewer than five periods each week. The periods per week depend upon the demands of the course. There are six periods per day consistsing of 59 minutes each. One semester hour of credit is granted for every period per week spent in class or lab.

The Variable Schedule enables students to have:
1. A more diversified educational experience through a broad range of course offerings.
2. A variety of resource centers with open computer and science laboratories as well as study areas.
3. Opportunity for counselors and teachers to meet with students on a one-to-one basis throughout the school day for tutoring and consultation.
4. Opportunity for students to plan their course choices and create their course schedule through a college-type of registration procedure.
5. Opportunity for students to develop personal responsibility during unsheduled time.

Support for Students

Study Center

Academic "double dosing" for students requiring tutoring, additional time and support. Students receive this opportunity during unscheduled time. Self referrals and/or teacher referrals allow students to participate.

Advanced Placement

In 2009, students took examinations in Biology, Calculus AB/BC, Chemistry, English Literature and Composition, English Language and Composition, French Language, Human Geography, Physics B and C, Spanish Language, spanish Literature, Statistics, U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History, Psychology, European History and Music Theory. Of the 729 Exams taken by 373 candidates, 76 percent were graded three or higher.

These recommendations are based upon studies done as part of our Accreditation from the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado High School Activities Association.

GPA and Class Rank

GPA and rank are based on grades 9-12. All courses for which the student receives an A, B, C, D, or F grade are included in the GPA; Pass/Fail courses are graded P or NC and are not included, but do count for graduation credit. If a student repeats a course, both grades are included in the GPA. All students are included in the class rank. Advanced Placement courses are weighted as follows:
Adv. Placement: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=1, F=0
All Other Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
